Doug:  I've had the same issues with my rooster.  It's good that you stood your ground, first time around.  What scares me is what if he does it when your kids are out there?  --  that's my issue, with my nephews & nieces.  Sometimes it takes more than one episode before they finally get the message across.  The last time mine did it, my dad was working on the coop & just happened to have a 2x4 in his hand --  he got wacked up along side the neck, and rolled three or four times.............   I would have liked to have seen that, but since then, he has thought twice before doing it.....  but I still don't trust him.  Next time he tries this, stand up, put both arms out and puff yourself up to make yourself look bigger and just walk at him til he turns away.  That usually helps too, but it doesn't work as well as the swift kick.

All these naughty roosters!! Is there such a thing as a nice one?? My mom REALLY wants one at their place for the Cockadoodle...but for kiddos and all the other reasons listed above...YIKES!!

* Timing and main impact: light snow will develop Wednesday
morning above 7000 feet then intensify during the afternoon and
continue through the night as snow levels lower to the valleys
floors Wednesday night. Snow will start to diminish Thursday
afternoon. Snow will result in poor visibilities along with
roads becoming slushy or snow covered.
* Snow accumulations: total accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are
possible from 5500 feet to 7000 feet and 12 to 24 inches above
7000 feet. Elevations below 5500 feet could see 1 to 4 inches.
* Winds and visibility: northerly winds 15 to 25 mph could result
in areas of blowing snow and visibilities below one-half mile at
times.
* Other impacts: this storm will cause stress on Young
livestock... along with possible power outages and tree damage.
* Locations affected include: Battle Ridge Pass... Bozeman...
Bozeman Pass... Targhee Pass... West Yellowstone... Big Hole

I think a lot of the problems are when there is only one rooster. I have several and none are nasty, but then I breed for temperment and would cull any one of them at the first sign of human agression. I just will not put up with a nasty rooster. I never let them mount a hen near me, and I never allow them to stand their ground and look at me. If one tries that I follow them around until they turn and run away. I just really don't give them a chance to start thinking about getting agressive.

Well hello neighbor!! Yup a little house full of happy ladies suits us just fine!

So what's everyone feeding their chickens? We are feeding Big Sky organic pellets, and Big sky organic Scratch, and just recently started feeding fodder from Montana Wheat grains.

. I feed my girls scratch and peck all organic feed with out soy or corn. I also feed them organic millet, and black oil seeds for treats. ( along with greens and veggies) I'm also now getting spent grains from a local brewery and my girls go nuts over it. I'm still getting 9/10 eggs each day from 10 hens.
