Hi, my name is Rae... I'm very new to this site... I live in Big Timber, and we just finished our hen house we had to build it really good because we live in the mountains and we have every preditor you can name... we have not started the run yet... but soon we'll be working on it....
I have 14 Australorps and 10 of them are 4 weeks and 4 are 7 weeks... they are so gentle so far... I am hoping to add a few Morans (sp) next spring... Anybody have any of these kind of chickens??

Do you think the little ones would get out of a chain link fence? We have this dog kennel that we never use... I was thinking about moving it over to the hen house so they could come out during the day.... just until we get the run built...

Welcome to BYC Rae. I live just outside Billings. I don't have chickens like yours but I do have some 13 week olds. They are white Orpington, barred rocks, white Plymouth rock and a speckled Sussex. I also have 3 grown golden sex links and one adult buff Brahma that runs them all in a very motherly way. your chain link idea sounds good. Just watch them at first and you'll know if they can get out. They just love being outside

Thank you, where about do you live? We live 15 miles south of the interstate in the mountains... Forrest service surrounds us... I love it up there,so peaceful... do you know how to start a new thread so we could have people from Montana...

Huntley MT here!! I get my chicks from Shiptons. Never a problem. Welcome!

That's where we got ours... no problems with mine either... but I wanted more and Shiptons didn't have any more...so I ordered more from (I'll have to look it up) I forgot the name... but they are all healthy...

Huntley Montana. Use to live in Livingston. Miss the mountains but not the wind Billings got hit with hail yesterday and Huntley didn't get any. We get lucky a lot. About the new thread. I'm new here also. I don't think there are to many of us from Montana. This thread was started to get fellow Montana members together but its not very active. Just above the first post on this page is a button that says start a new thread. That's how you do it. Let me know if you do. I seen your post about Shiptons. I love them. They are very careful with how they handle everything. Never a problem. All 4 of my chicks in march were female.

WelcomeGranny368W. I have Australorps too. I live in the middle of town (Butte, MT) and have 8 Australorps, 2 silver laced wyndottes, and 7 barnyard mix babies that my mama hen just hatched.

So we have people from Butte, Big Timber, Huntley.... where are all the people who have chickens in Montana? There is a house we pass everytime we go to Billings.... they are on, the north side of the interstate and we look for all the chickens running in the yard everytime we pass by...I think they are located just west of Park City....

Hi, well there are a few of us here...do you ever sell pullets? I was looking to buy a few last year but never really got serious about it....
do you have to really insulate your hen house? I was worried about them getting too cold so we insulated our hen house really good...I'm getting so excited to start working on the run... am I crazy or what?? lol

I was wondering how high to put the nesting boxes? I think someone on here said about 16" off the ground, does that sound right? I'm thinking that they need to be lower than the roosting bars, right?

Hi, no I don't sell pullets. I just got my Roo Handsome Rob to help with our feline predator and occasional hawk or eagle issues. I don't intend to hatch any out but who know's, I might get ambitious and try it. He is a Wellsummer and I got him in case I decide to breed for olive eggs. I have an EE hen who lays light green eggs and one who lays blue eggs. Also have two 18 week EE pullets awaiting their egg color. Have Australorps, Wellsummers, a Buff Orpington, EE's, Black sex link, Speckled sussex and a Red Comet (the boss). I din't insulate my coop because my flock is well suited to the cold. They did just fine last year (which was my first time with chickens), I did supplement with occasional heat when the night dropped below -20, but that wasn't very often. I've read that as long as there is proper ventilation, the cold is not a problem. We will start working on our run later this summer. Just finished building the new 8x8 coop and they love it. My ladies and gentleman are very spoiled and I think its great! Enjoy working on your run, post pics if you have them.
