you know I was thinking more buffs, my girls are the best egg layers and I get one from each of them every day. i would love a different colored buff orphington, need about 3 more. Im selling my coop I had made last year, and having a new wider one built. I love my coop its great for 5 but to small for 8 or ten birds. i want to get the girls early this next year, start them first of February and have them laying by july. Buffs seem to be great layers, maybe leg horns to ? with my kids we seem to go through 3 dozen a week . my chickens work over time lol, and Im still buying free range from others. How close are you to Butte?

I'm between Roundup and Billings, but love to take a drive. I should be hatching Orps mid march. I will have Lav, Blue, Black hens in with Lav and Black roos. I will have my Buff and project Crel in with my project Crel roo. The project Crel hens are very pretty, and super fluffy. My Orps lay all winter, and are sweet and friendly. My Black roo is very nice, huge, half english. He is a beautiful bird.

Ok, by all rights my buff went broody. Yikes. and she is driving all the chickens nuts since she is taken over the only nest box they all share ( we have 3 and none of them want anything to do with them, just the one she is on. I need 3 fertile eggs, Im looking for sex links. does anyone any where have 3 fertile eggs they could meet me with and I would pay them and there gas? I was thinking it takes 21 days to hatch, and I would keep them in the house until February when there fully feathered. do you think by then I can put them out in a new coop just for them? or is it to cold in montana for 3, 3 month old chickens? help me think this out please ))))

LOL. I have plenty of fertile eggs. Where are you? Mine aren't sex links but it's really easy to tell the sexes of mine.

Do you think it will be ok for her to hatch out chicks in this cold weather? She shares a coop with 4 other chickens and I worry her babies would be in harms way. My coop is just perfect for 5 chickens and no more. I guess I could get a large kennel to put her and the eggs in, but what will I do with a hen and chicks over the winter? She has always been broody some what. After her first egg she has wanted to sit in that nest box lol she seems to want to be a mommy badly. Funny thing is, she is in the only box the girls will use, so they have to try to sit on her to lay an egg ! She then steals them and under her they go lol. I'm pretty sure she is not going to move off any egg she gets under her! Oh how I wish I had purchased a coop for this purpose before now. Christmas is just around the corner, no money to get a new coop.

I just stumbled onto to this thread and I have to tell all you Montanans that I LOVE Montana!! My cousin & his family live there. I think it is the most beautiful and breath taking state......God's Country!! I was out there a few years ago and I am planning on going back next year. I spent 12 days out there and didn't want to come home even though I live in the country. I'll take mountains and Big Sky Country anytime!!

what part of Montana did you come to? Living in Butte I love the mountains that surround us, the cold I can give or take, but the fact bugs die is a plus lol

He lived in Belgrade but now lives in Dillon. While we were out to visit we stayed a few days in a guest house on a ranch in Fishtale. The night we drove in, it was raining cats & dogs and we arrived at the guest house about 10 pm. Good thing my cousin knew where he was going because it was so dark and raining so much I couldn't see a thing. The following morning when we were heading into town for breakfast we found out that the road was washed out from all the rain through the night and we had to take different route. It was awesome waking up before dawn and hearing/seeing the sheep grazing on the mountain across the road from us. Like I said I'll take mountains & Big Sky anytime!! Here is a pic of what we came upon on our way into town!!

Well, I would recommend a dog kennel and lots of straw for insulation! You can build a warm bunker with straw bales and put the kennel nestled inside, and wood chips or straw for insulation. Momma hen will be okay if she has something like that. You can also go to a Murdochs or other pet supply store and buy an outdoor heat mat for pets. I've kept chicks happy with that!

PM me and maybe we can set up somewhere/time to meet.
