Moon Pie is gone

Thanks for the sympathy, y'all. I'm taking this one hard. She was barely a year old and still very much a kitten. Not knowing what happened makes it worse to. When they are older or ill you can kind of wrap your head and heart around it. She was young and silly and goofy and by all appearances healthy. I didn't see it coming.

I believe that some of us are called to care for the animals. Some people are called to care for children and some are called to care for the elderly. Some are called to do other things. I believe I was called to care for critters. To that end, I believe that animals are sent to us for some reason. All of mine (and there are a herd of them!) came to me. I didn't go out looking for any of them except for Lucy the dog in my avatar. (My original dog needed a companion. Lucy was a half grown puppy at boxer rescue.) All of the others have just sort of landed in my lap. Moon Pie was no exception. I was driving home at dusk last July and saw three kittens playing in a ditch beside a busy road. I stopped and managed to coax her out of the culvert. My original intent was to find her a new home. I already had a houseful of cats and didn't need another, you know?

No one stepped up though and Pie slid into the family dynamics like she had lived here her whole life. She bullied the older boy kitties into playing with her and generally rampaged about the place being goofy. She had a personal vendetta against the window blinds and spent many an afternoon trying to kill them. She was so tiny she could sit up on the window ledge (where the lock is) and fight the blinds and her tail through the blinds. She was a nut! She turned the house on its ear and merrily zoomed through it all. She made me laugh every day.

One of her favorite games was to "hide" in the bathtub as I was sitting on the toilet. I would just see those ears and eyes peeking up over the edge. If I tapped my fingers on the tub she would blast up and swat me and then hunker back down for another "kill". Man, I'll miss that game and seeing those big yellow eyes peering up at me.

Her other game was to sit and watch me while I ate my morning cereal. She would lean forward closer and closer until her little nose was almost touching the bowl. She looked like the Snoopy vulture character. If she thought I wasn't paying attention her little paw would slowly sneak forward in an attempt to steal a cheerio. Goofy. She was a sweetheart. I am going to miss her deeply.

Thanks for the hugs. It helps knowing that others understand. My family just thinks they are cats.

I am so sorry to hear about your sweet little girl. I do hope that whatever caused her to pass on is not something that can be transferred to any of your other pets.

And best wishes for you and your family.

From what I have read online, the most common cause of sudden death in young cats is heart problems. They are fine and then gone, which is exactly what happened with Pie. When I found her she was very blue around the mouth. That would make sense if it had been her heart. She was also really small, which could have been a result of an undiagnosed heart problem. I'm guessing that was what happened. I had been playing with her not long before I found her dead. She had been active and fine all day with no signs of illness.

Thanks again, y'all for the support. She was a GREAT cat. I miss her little mouthy self.

I just lost my baby boy, Elliot the other day. He was barely over 2 years old... at first we thought he was run over, but the neighbor told us she saw him seizing on her porch the night before we found him that morning; strange, since he was so healthy... So there is no telling what happened to my little kitty either.

Your family says they are "just cats"????? Nonono, there are no "just cats" cats rule. You have the right idea, and it sounds like Moon Pie was very lucky to have been rescued by you. You gave her a life she would have never had on the streets, a life of peace, fun and love. I'm sorry it all had to end so soon though
