I'm new at chickens, and my girls and rooster are all new to each other. Everything fine, except one of the girls was stressed at first, and finally settling down. She eats fine, drinks fine, is calm. She's very attached to me already. She let's me pick her up, and love on her. She had loose poops from the change, at first, and her poops are normal now, so today I did a little bath for her, to soak her butt. To try and clean off the old poop. She didn't fight me, and seemed to enjoy the soak. I had to separate her out again from the rooster, because he tried to mount her after I took her out of her soak. Anyway, maybe this will take several soaks to get the old poop loose enough to come off? I saw a small lump of poop, about golf ball size, but I really don't feel comfortable trying to cut it off. Hoping with enough soaks, it will eventually come off? She's a real sweetie 💜

Do you just let her soak, or do you work the poop with your fingers while she's soaking? After she sits in the water for a while and the poop has a chance to absorb water and soften, you need to really work it with your fingers to get it to come off. Massage it and try to break it up into smaller and smaller pieces, until you can slide each lump off the feathers without having to cut them. It could take some time... and patience, and massaging, but you can do it in one go. Been there done that... many times! I have an extra fluffy breed that gets poopy in the back from normal poops, not just loose ones, so I need to occasionally give them a bath and a trim. Make sure the hen is dry before you put her back with the flock. Dry her off with a hair dryer. She looks different when wet, and chickens don't like different - they may attack her. The rooster was probably dominating her by mounting her right after, to make sure she still knows her place after her adventure.

My first ever chicken butt soak. She seemed happy doing it, I only had to hold her a little. I worked on it as gently as I could, without pulling on her skin, while she soaked. At least I got it softened up, and plan on going back tomorrow. I wait until it gets hot out, so she won't get chilled.

Yeah give it another try tomorrow. When it starts to soften up, try to crush it with your fingers. Squish the poop itself, without pulling on the feathers. You can do this in any weather - I've done it in the winter, too - just towel her off when done and then blow dry her. Chickens seem to enjoy the blow dryer for some reason.

This sounds like a plan. Thank you. One of my dogs (Jumbo Yorkie) has a similar issue, and I have to keep his butt hairs short. Oh joy 😂
