I got my first chicks a couple years ago.
I was down to four hens and two roosters.
then dad decided he wan't a NEW dog, (we live in the same 14 acres)
He got one that was about a year old.
In a week and half, I lost 2 hens and 2 roosters.
I raised cain with mom over it and the dog left with dad
saying he was sorry.
So I have two Cuckoo Morans left, one is brooding two eggs, was six till a LARGE black
snake thought they was lunch.
This was the second time I caught this snake, first time I took it away, but it came back.
Now it will never return.
My hen is brooding in that camper in the background.
So off to the Farm store today, I sent the wife for some chicks.
I opened the box to see an assortment.
Yum, yum, first feeding at my house, we keep them in a large cage for a week or two with a heat light.
Then the day we got rid of the chicken killing dog (gave him to my nephew)
This one shows up. Someone dumped him.
He is only about 9 months old I think. So far he minds he got after the roos
outside and I called him off and smacked a tree with a stick and got his attention and he does not
want to chase them now. I think he understood he would be homeless again. He looks like a
Heeler/Australian Shepard mix. :dunno
So thats about it......
Wait you might have seen above where I lost my roos to a dog. In case your wondering the roos we got
now came from a Craigslist, freebies two days ago. My hen was acting badly after loosing her whole flock,
and with her sister brooding, she was spending the day hidden. So she is all happy new to have two new
boy friends to run around with.
My chickens free range the yard/field with the dogs.
2 Roosters, 2 hens, 10 new chicks, 3 dogs.
Dad next door has 5 dogs, I hadn't lost a chicken to a dog in 2 years till the new one.
