Cherstin,
Just out of curiosity, what would you have me do when the dog comes over? Ignore her? Leave her out on the road?

She came over this morning, I took her in off the road and called the owner. He wasn't able to come get her for a while, so I kept her until he was able to take her home. She is back at her home now, but when she shows up again, I will call the owner again.

ETA - I do hope they decide to give me the dog eventually, but if and when they do, that will be their decision. I made no comment about wanting the dog after the original comment.

I still don't feel guilty for not taking her to the shelter immediately because I don't feel it is MY responsibility to bend over backwards to return a lost dog to someone. I took her in when it was convenient for me AND I had already done a large amount of work attempting to find her owner (even though they had done none to find her).

The ONLY reason she was chipped was because these people got her from the shelter about a year ago, and this shelter chips all their outgoing dogs.

She checked for fliers and newspaper ads. The other family wasn't even looking. It is more the responsibility of the person who lost the dog to look for it than it is for a finder to track down an owner.

If it is illegal to tie the dog out, then they need to get a kennel or install a taller fence. If they can't afford the taller fence or the kennel, then they really can't afford the dog. If they chose to not get a better fence or a kennel, then it needs more attention and supervision while outside. Obviously, they don't have the time or ambition because the dog still gets out.

No, the bottom line is that the family cares so little about the dog that they haven't changed their ways. The OP is not their mother. It's not up to her to teach them to be better owners. Some people just shouldn't have pets. That family sounds like they should be on that list. Would you prefer that when the OP sees the dog she just kick it and chase it away to teach it a lesson? It's not right to blame the OP for this. The fault is entirely with the dog's family, not the OP. I hope that, in the future, she lets the family come looking for the dog or turns it into the pound so they can be fined for their negligence. Yes, they are negligent. Just feeding a dog and erecting an inadequate fence is not providing a good home. Dogs also need attention and boundaries that they can't or will not penetrate. This` not is not in a good home. It is in an irresponsible home.

Yes, the dog needs to stay in the fence. It doesn't matter who the dog loves more. The truth is that the family doesn't love the dog enough to take care of it. They obviously know that the dog won't stay in the fence. They obviously know that the fence is inadequate. If they really cared about the dog, the problem would have been fixed after the first time it escaped. It's not the OP's responsibility to teach the family anything. It would seem that they might be too stupid to learn anyway. After all, how many times does a dog need to get out before you realize that the fence is inadequate. The people are stupid, and you can't cure stupid.

I think since we have degenerated into arguing, we don't need to leave this open.

Thank you to those who were supportive and helpful.

Those of you who need to argue and generally be negative, please remember you are not in the OP's shoes. Make your point in a kind manner and move on. No need to beat a dead horse.
