Sorry, no pic, but gross description. Both my girls Dolley and Rosalyn have been pecked to bleeding, Dolley with a gaping wound that is healing VERY nicely, and Rosalyn with a lot of redness that I thought was a bloody part of her tail section. But upon further disgusting inspection tonight, I was able to take it out of her feather and can only describe it as seeming like after-birth or a placenta-like thing stuck in her tailfeathers. ANy idea what that could be? No roo, so no fertilized eggs or anything, and I know they don't have live births, so it can't be a placenta, but I swear that is what it looked like! All bloody and fleshy. I was able to cut it out of her feathers and now she's a bit naked in that area, but at least most of the bloody masses are gone. Any ideas what that could have been?

Sounds like egg white - could it be? Fertilized or unfertilized eggs don't matter as they don't get pregnant. Could she have broken an egg, or had an egg broken inside of her that cooked with her body temperature? This happens sometimes.

Also is she laying age? Only laying feed, with oyster shell given free choice?

Also check her carefully for lice/mites since she's nekked there.

I can't tell if she has a broken egg inside her--how could I figure that out? Everything else looks pretty normal. I'll see if she lays tomorrow. She's usually a one egg a day layer, and she didn't lay today. So that could be. Will it expell on its own if it's that?

definitely not a prolapsed vent, because I was able to pull off the bloody parts like it was separate tissue--like it was stuck in her feathers. Not part of the vent at all...almost like she pooped this bloody mass and it got stuck in her feathers.

It was pretty gross and all kinds of flies were attracted to it when I cut the stuff out.

The normal method is a palpation - gloved hand, lubrication (KY is the best, olive oil will work), and just going into the vent from the top part - like along the top wall - gently. Your other hand should be gently on her vent - and see if you feel anything inbetween. If you do, then flush the vent with the cool water to get everything out. Cool, not warm - as cool shrinks and cools inflamed tissues. Baby ear syringes and spare turkey basters are great for this. If you feel anything, that's usually a good time for penicillin injections. In fact, with that thing having left her and injury, keep it in mind.

By the way, you mention flies. You might end up having a problem with maggots. I'd keep her inside for 2 days to allow the wounds to close up - OR - go buy Screw Worm Wound spray and use on the wounds after you clean and dress them. That repels flies and kills whatever lands there. If maggots happen, it's ok - just clean them off. Smothering they with honey really helps and if you don't rinse it all off it's ok.
