went to get eggs this morning i have 6 rsl who have been laying every day 3 days ago i got 2 very soft shell eggs so i put out some grit and oyster shell 3 day of fine eggs. today 2 more soft shells but there was 7 eggs i am hoping its because they are still young they are 6-7 months old .and whats with the extra egg do i need to do anything. the two soft eggs this morning where on the roost again

I had that problem and O fed her oyster shell and crushed egg shells along with scrambled eggs. For some reason none of my chickens will eat egg shells broken up small. I have to put them in the chopper and almost powder them. Then I mix them in with scrambled eggs and they don't even know they're eating them. It may take a little bit for the shells to harden up. My hen didn't lay a hard shelled egg for 2 weeks.

Nothing to worry about... this is pretty normal.. theyve only been laying for 3 days straight.. they are teens, their bodies still getting it right, you'll probably get a few weird ones over the next month or two...

Sounds normal to me. When our hens started to lay we had several soft shells within the first couple of weeks and then had the occasional soft shell for several more weeks.

I've never had that happened with my girls. They alway had hard shelled eggs. In fact the eggs are even harder to crack open the store bought. I feed them egg layers feed and provide oyster shell and grit mixed together. Seems to work fine for me. I don't feed any left over scraps. They are free ranging and maybe that's why their eggs are always hard. I'm not sure why.

Probably because they're newer layers. And I've had the double egg with the dud before too...a dud on the dropping board, but still 5 for 5 eggs for the day (I think my dud was a jello egg though...membrane only). What did help me was not feeding ANY scraps and treats for a week other than yogurt and crushed egg shell.
