When i went out to check my babies yesterday morning i was startled to see a big hole has been dug in front of their cage i was sooooooo lucky all my babies were ok i fed them and gave them fresh water and went and hid to see if i could find out what was trying to get in it was still very early in the morning the sun was just starting to rise i waited and waited i almost gave up til i seen the dog the neighbors left behind when their house burnt down he was sneaking around the pen i called my mother in law and she brought over the live trap we baited it and set it and went in the house to watch out the window and about ten mins later he was in the trap we loaded him up and took him to the nearest pound as he is scared of everyone hasnt had any shots and smelled like he had be sprayed by a skunk and starved almost to death his ribs were showing i mean i feel bad about hauling him off but i didnt want my lil babies being his easy meal and i am their momma now if i dont protect them who will?

Don't feel bad. I think you did the right thing. Depending on the shelter, they may try to rehab him but even if they don't it would be better that it be humanely put down than starve to death or be shot by someone if he tried to get into their coops.

Glad your babies were okay.

Thats great that you found what dug the hole before you lost any ducks- but I have to say I feel pretty bad for the dog. Being left behind was pretty irresponsible- regardless of there house burning down they could have told an animal welfare agency about the dog if they had nowhere for it to go. I hope it can be rehomed somewhere good after all of this. Its so unfair of the owners to have left the dog to fend for itself- Im sure given proper food everyday- it woudnt have been trying to get at your ducks.

we live out in the country i have called every agency i can find around here they all say we dont come out that far.... my neighbors were running a dog rescue place out of their house it was awful 20 huge dogs running around in the house 30 35 dogs out in tiny pens and countless numbers of cats and kittens (they put down all the dogs when house burnt down) except this one dog no one could ever catch it it climbed pens so they couldnt put it in one of those they would put food out but he would only come when no one was outside it has ran around my house for 8 years it has chased my kids on their bikes to the point where it scared them and they wrecked the police told me to shoot it the mayor of this little town told me to shoot it ..... i don't have it in me to kill anything i guess i forgot to mention in the first post that it was a no kill shelter

That is pretty sad about the dog. You are right on not to let your babies be it's easy meal, but the people running the shelter should face some sort of consequences for how all the animals in their care were treated. As much as I hate to say it, there are times when the most humane thing you can do for an animal is put it down, especially if it can't be rehabilitated. I am glad your babies are OK.
