I opened up the coop this morning and was attacked by a swarm of Mosquitos. Here in Florida it comes with the territory, I'm worried that my little girls will be drained dry. Not to mention us humans trying to clean and retrieve eggs. The coop is freshly built(1 week) and the hens have only been outside for 2 nights. What can I do or use to keep the flying blood suckers off and or away? They sell citronella plants at lowes that we are going to get for around the pool could I plant a few around the outside of the coop?

There are certain herbs you can plant to help repel the mosquitoes such as rosemary, citronella, lemon grass etc. You could plant some around your run as well as take clippings and just throw them in the coop once in a while.

Make so coop operates as a scent trap where some of the repellent plant material is inside and top and most of sides block wind. Also keep birds in good nutrition. I see a couple hundred mosquitos per bird in my setup at night so your predicament is a lot more widespread than realized.

I guess the first question should be is there any water on the ground if so that needs to be drained off and maybe some sand put down if that is the problem ...

Do you have any photos of your coop and the inside so people can help you out ...

The planting of different plants around the coop that bugs do not like is a good idea ....
