Mosquitoes on the TX coast bout to carry me off

It’s mosquito season y’all and I’m not talking about a few little buggers. I’m talking about so thick they’re in your eyes and nose and ears and don’t you dare open your mouth. They’re getting us in our sleep and we let 100 in the car even though we ran and jumped in fast. I would move in a heartbeat if it were an option.

I usually let hubs spray something this time of year in the grass but this is my first year with chickens. Permethrin is out because I’m on a lake. What else? I want super natural stuff cause I try to be as organic as possible and I have a 2 year old.

I am going to let others chime in because I went through the same thing here this year in Ky. I live near the woods and determined nothing was truly safe for organic practices except just let the chickens eat them.

I applied bug spray every day over the summer and couldn’t be out late in evening. I would get bites through my clothing. I live near the woods and suffered bites every day. It’s cooler here now so have some relief with clothing and reduced humidity.

I found some products at TSC that you could spray and once dry it should be safe for livestock. But once I researched this with free ranging animals and mine do, it was best not to use any products. I’m curious to see what others have done.

We are having the same problem in Southern Ohio. The tiger mosquitos are AWFUL this year! Other than to slather on the DEET, I’ve not found anything to be particularly helpful. I’m wondering if I need to vaccinate my young flock against fowl pox? Any suggestions?

I have used “mosquito beater” in the past (before chickens but with dogs) with some moderate success. We have a heavy mosquito load in our wooded area and the stuff never got rid of all of them but you could definitely tell the difference from the areas of the yard I used it and not. The package claims it is safe for pets and is mostly natural plant oils and such, however I believe an inactive ingredient is corn, and I don’t know if the chickens would consume it or if it is even ok for them. I did not need to use any this year because of the dry weather so I have not looked at the package regarding chickens.

Inactive ingredient is corn? chicken feed is made of corn, and you can feed poultry cracked corn. It shouldn't harm them. My little flock of 5 ducks followed me around the yard as I was spraying it, squawking at me if I accidentally waved the sprayer in their direction but no harm came to them. I mix mine with vegetable oil and water to make it stick better.
