Hello chicken friends-

I am a newbie about to order what is necessary before I get 2 chicks and try this wonderful chicken raising thing. I am a vegetarian but do love to eat farm fresh eggs sometimes. I am an elementary school teacher so I would like to get something to feed and water them throughout the day that I can check on in the evenings when I let them run around. Any suggestions as to effective, low maintenance feeders and waterers? Looking on Amazon now....

Thank you for any tips!

Hello and welcome to BYC,

The quart jar feeders and waterer will get you started. They are the type that screw onto a base. Mostly the jars are plastic these days, but the old Mason jars should work as well if you want the retro look. With only a couple of chicks, they should hold the feed and water easily while you are away.

If you have a farm store near, they might be cheeper than Amazon. There is not much weight in these, but the bulk makes the cost more to ship/purchase from Amazon. If you have a local store they will be around three dollars each.

Enjoy your birds,

RJ
