What is the most popular egg laying breed? or the best egg laying breed in your opinion.

I think you should seperate it into brown egg layers or white egg layers. The best White egg layers I hear are leghorns. I have to say of my limited knowledge of breeds the best brown egg layer I've had is my Black Australorp.

Interesting. I am curious to try some different breeds for egg layers. Just looking for advice from people who have had good or bad experience with certain breeds.

I did some research before I got my chickens. What I found may or may not be true for people who have actually raised the breeds but I was really concerned about the mannerism and behavior of the chicken as I also have 4 children. I hear buff orpingtons are like the teddy bears of the chicken world. I read that reds can be flighty. I just got 3 chicks and am waiting to see what they behold for me...a Cuckoo Maran, a black star, and a golden wyandotte... (which is now looking to be male :-() I have had 2 Americanas and they lay pink, purple of green eggs and they have awesome personalities in my opinion.... in fact my favorite chicken is one of them. They lay about 4-5 eggs a week and really slow down in the winter. My Australorp lays 5-6 eggs a week... no joke. like clock work. She's an egg laying champ!

Are you after a pure breed or hybrid? Hybrids have been specially developped to produce huge quantities of eggs. Different types will also lay different coloured eggs.

I'm a fan of pure breeds, personally, just because I think it's important to maintain them
If you look at the world record for number of eggs laid in a year, you'll actually find it's held by a black Australorp.

I had a black australorp that laid very well this past winter and because of that I got five more.My experience with Orpingtons is that their broody, which pauses their egg laying.Plymouth rocks do fairly well.
