Does anyone know what the most purebred offspring you can breed with one roo?
Ex: blue, splash and black from 1 blue roo
Are there any colours in certain breeds that will give you more than 3 purebred colours from 1 roo?

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

Now I'm no genetics expert but a definite enthusiast for this type of fun.

So just some thoughts... adding in barred or cuckoo hens could give you sex linked black pullets and barred cockerels. I think a white hen will throw white offspring. Or if it were dominant white over black, could throw paint.

I also wonder how it could work using a Lavender cock and adding lav hens to the mix...

But another thought.. though not the same as pure breed... still a great option that so many are pursuing is adding blue laying hens to their dark layers or vice versa... and getting your original pure breeds and olive eggers to boot.

I personally keep all my boys in a stag pen... and a hen flock... of several different purebred varieties. I add the roo I wish to hatch from and collect only the correct colored eggs to hatch... eg: cream, blue, white, brown, dark brown. This allows me to keep a maximum number of pure breeds with a minimal amount of housing and separation and has worked well for me a few years on now. :thumbsup

Check out this color calculator... it can give you some real basic ideas but does not account for pattern leakage or hidden genes. The second drop down tab is in English..

@The Moonshiner has a far better understanding than I do. Hopefully you will get some more input so I can see the intriguing answers as well! (TIA) :thumbsup

Happy chickeneering! :wee

I wouldn't add Lavender to a BBS pen, but I suppose you could add Mottled or Cuckoo. Mauve (an unrecognized color) is a mix of Blue and Chocolate I think.

Thanks! At the moment i have a splash marans roo over black copper marans, blue copper marans and cream legbars and i'm planning on keeping some splash hens and olive eggers to breed back. I've got a bunch of cochin bantams as well and i might add in some birds here and there. Anyway, thanks for the info!
