Mother duck crushed egg on day 27 duckling still alive.

My duck has been sitting on her eggs but when I went down today I found she had crushed one of her eggs. It was still alive and I would check on it regularily. The duckling is still trying to internal pip. I have put another egg shell on top so it will not get further crushed.Daffy (the duck) pecked at in when I was putting it back in the nest which drew the blood. I then put coconut oil on it. What should I do?

When I have this happen to my chicken eggs I usually put the egg in an incubator until it hatches then I put the baby back out with the mom. I have left smashed eggs under a broody, some hatch some got more smashed and died.

Yeah the egg is out with mum rn but I am worried she will smash it more. we do not have an incubator sadly. Hopefully the egg shell I put on top of it will protect the mum from crushing it any more. Duckling is still alive, beginning to internal pip

The best way is to put the egg in an incubator. The egg will be at risk staying under the hen.

I do not have an incubator. All I can do is hope that mumma won't crush it any more. Is putting the extra egg shell on top a good thing?

to keep moist spray with boiled cooled water or sterile saline i read to use that in the all species hatching guide at the top of the goose forum so idk about coconut oil - but new duck mommy will know
