Mother duck crushed egg on day 27 duckling still alive.

I would say use some tape to help hold the shell together but I think there is to much shell missing. If it’s already internally piped I’d say it has a pretty good chance of making it. Time will tell

Cover the exposed membrane with coconut oil, Vaseline or I like to use plain original neosporin to prevent bacteria with it being exposed just a tad early. Since it is day 27 I personally would not be too worried putting it back under the duck with you having no other way to keep it warm. If it was day 24 I would be more concerned, but it is so close to hatch and it still does need to be kept warm.

Yes I have put some coconut oil on the open bits of membrane. I will top it up iin the morning.

UPDATE:

Went down this morning to find the cracked egg was missing. Lots of external pips going on tho. Mumma duck had eggshell on her beak; would she have of killed the suffering duckling?

Very likely that's what happened. My hen did the same with her eggs when one died in shell. She ate it.

Yes I'm thinking thats the case... we also have mice in our chicken coop and they sometimes eat the eggs

Darn. I'm sorry to hear it. I prefer the broody to hatch but I have 2 incubators on standby just in case of emergency. My broken shell incident made me go out and buy the 2nd incubator. Hopefully this doesn't happen again for you.

Sorry your poor baby didn’t make it. Sometimes the hens know when a duckling isn’t going to make it.

Thank you, we had more external pips today which was good. There was another cracked egg but definatly not as bad as the other one. We are keeping a close eye out on it so she doesn't do it again. That one has already external pipped tho.
