So I have an old english game Batam and she hatched 3 chicks about 2 weeks ago. They are mixed with black australorp I have suspicions even thought very you and bantams that I have at least 1 rooster.i know it's hard to tell with bantams but anyway I heard her crowing today was she trying to show the chicks that maybe roosters how to crow or what is happening. I do have multiple rooster as well. So any ideas as to why this is happening. Also Is there anyone who has oegb mixed with black australorp? If so any idea how big they will get because she is only like a pound and when born they were tiny. The size of quail and her eggs were only a little bigger then a robin egg. So just wondering about the crowing and the size.

Ps I know black australorps do have bigger combs so maybe the chicks take more after their dad I know the coloring is definitely that way. But not sure if size.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks missy.

If you can give us a video of her making the noise it could help us.
I have had one crowing hen once, but I think it is rare. no, she does not have to teach them to crow. Do you have a rooster?a friend of mine had a hen start crowing once after they lost there rooster to a predator. Once they got a new rooster, she stopped. Maybe she is excedingly proud of her new brood and just has to crow about it!

Cute pictures!
Some of it could be hormonal.
I would still check her crop to see that it's emptying overnight as well.

Bear with my reasoning. I have a 3 yr old BR hen that crows. Last year she started this - it was molting season(hormones/stopped laying) and I had lost my rooster. After she molted and resumed laying, not much crowing at all (maybe once every few weeks). As summer went by I noticed she crowed a bit more, she has some reproductive problems (likely cancer/eyp-again hormone related), she is molting and has begun to crow often, especially in the mornings. I've noted her crop is not always emptying overnight-those mornings the crop is not empty she really crows a lot - I've been working on her for a little while, the crop issues I'm sure are related to repro problems.
fwiw- even though I have a good suspicion that mine is crowing due to health issues, it is quite comical to watch her, sometimes when she is belting 2-3 crows in a row, she almost looks surprised afterwards, like "did I just do that'?

All that to say...likely your broody's crowing is hormonal, she is not teaching the chicks to crow:)

I will have to check her crop as far as I know it is emptying but she is on chick starter with her chicks and chick grit in the brooder. So maybe it is something like that I'm going to see if she is doing it again today but I love that story it is so funny I really lol. I could picture your hen crowing and then looking around like did I do that that is funny. Thank you i really appreciate your input.

She's just fine being on chick starter:)
If I had to take a guess, the crowing is broody hormones, but I could be totally wrong.
