Buffy, my Araucana was killed by a hawk. She had been taking excellent care of 4 chicks that are now one month. She taught them to forage and was very protective of them. I have other 3 chickens and a rooster, a Barred Plymouth Rock (their Dad). One chicken is a year old, two are 10 months old and another Araucana that is 8 months same as Buffy. They have been kept in a separate coop but have been out together when I am home. I was wondering if I should put the chicks with the other young Araucana to see if she will mother them. She hasn't pecked them or chased them like the others have. She seems a little afraid of them. They are just getting their feathers but I live in warm Florida.
Thanks for any help. I am so sad about Buffy. She was my favorite and the only one that would come jump up in my lap and like to be petted. We are building a screened in section. We had them in tractors but would let them out for a couple hours when we were home to enjoy them before they went in. My husband went in the house for about an hour and when he came out he saw the hawk.
Thanks for any help.
