I don't know too much about chickens and I need some uplifting information - if any, on this subject. There is a wild hen in our neighborhood that has 3 chicks about several months old that are able to eat on their own. The mother hen has somehow, injured her leg - badly. The leg is weak, she hops along slowly but still manages to keep up with her young ones. She lifts her leg high when she wobbles along. She's a good mother and still watches over them. She has been eating and it's been about a week since her injury. I think she's a much stronger woman than I am. I keep on hoping that her leg will get a little better. Since I first saw her a week ago, she's been eating more. At first, she couldn't bend her head down to eat unless she laid down. Now, she has adjusted and is now eating standing up. I would like to throw some chicken feed to help her, any suggestions?

Who does she belong to? Do they feed them at all? It might be good to get some "chick starter" or "starter crumbles" for the babies. Mom will eat that too. I am guessing since they are "free range" that they have enough grit already. You can also feed them scrambled eggs, yogurt, or cooked oatmeal as a treat occasionally.

The owner had these chickens as pets. Well, he decided to 'free' them one day, so now they and others roam around the area. They feed on their own. I've talked to him several times but to no avail. I'll buy some feed - also, scrambled eggs? That is good to know - they'll be much happier. thanx.
