Got two 5 week old mottled Cochin bantams today. One is frizzled and one is not. No pink at all on their wattles or comb. I looked at many, and these are the two I chose, hoping they are pullets. Do you agree?

I sure hope I can stand it to wait for 2-3 weeks, although I have no choice! One struggles more when held upside down, but both tuck their feet close to the body in the same position. When held upside down by the feet, one struggles and one just hangs there. I know these methods are surely not fool proof though. The one that struggles is also the one who stands more erect, and seems to be the leader.

The main thing now is the combs-- they aren't big and they show no pink or red. And there is no wattle development. So they look like pullets now and if that doesn't change within 3 weeks or so, you can assume they're pullets.

It's a bad idea to hold chickens upside down by their feet. It causes them to be stressed and it can seriously injure them. I know it's something that is done a lot but it shouldn't be.

Oh, you guys have made my day! So I have two girls. One last question-in my second pic, you can see the frizzle's feathers. Are they supposed to stick up like that and be that funky looking at this age? My other frizzles were older than this when I got them, so no way to compare.

Crazy feathers can be normal until they get feathered in more.
