I have a 5 week old Mottled Houdan who is starting to get a red comb. I’m concerned with how young it is that it could be a cockerel. I’ve never had a crested breed though, so I have no idea how to sex them.

Just based on the comb? Or are you seeing other things as well?Very likely a cockerel
The redness of the comb at this age is quite concerning. Since they’re bearded, wattles are basically off the table so comb size and sex-specific feathering (but this comes in around 10+ weeks) are the easiest to go off of. Crest shape too but it’s dependent on the line of crested birds. Many hatchery birds seem to have messy crests in pullets and show lines this isn’t the case at least for Polish.Just based on the comb? Or are you seeing other things as well?
