I noticed this morning that my 2nd Mottled Java chick was huddled in a corner and not eating. She has been much smaller since I got her, although the hatchery said they were the same age. She just doesn't seem to be growing and is now less than half the size of her sister at 14 weeks.

I brought her in this morning. She doesn't seem to be having any difficulty breathing. She started eating and drinking after maybe half an hour inside but is still very lethargic and not moving around. She just sits there with her head down like it's too heavy to lift.

Any ideas?

I would give her some electrolytes and vitamins, or Poultry NutriDrench orally. Have you considered worming her with Valbazen or SafeGuard, and starting some Corid in her water in case of coccidiosis? When treating with Corid vitamins must be stopped until it is finished. How does her crop feel? Does it fill up during the day and then empty by the next morning? I would offer some scrambled egg or tuna along with some moistened feed.

Her crop is empty this morning and she's not as lethargic, but she's wheezing a little. Not all the time, just when I disturb her.

It is good that her crop is emptying overnight. I would try to offer some feed plus some high protein treats to get her eating. It is always a challenge to find out why one is not thriving. It could be organ-related, a chronic case of coccidiosis, worms, or being prevented from eating. I had a hen who always had access to fresh feed and scrambled egg treats, but she would run off and eat weird things like tree algae, and junk. She starved herself to death eventually. Sometimes we find clues after death if we do a home necropsy, or have the state vet do a professional necropsy.

X2. Get some eggs, suet if you have it, some meat into her. They lose weight quickly once they don't eat enough. Just went through a month of force feeding my hen before she made a full recovery. She's laying so I also gave calcium citrate, but you can give b complex and vitamin e in addition to higher protein.

I offered meat, she wouldn't touch it. I don't have any eggs, so that will have to wait. I put butter on her beak and she didn't even open it. I gave her vit e and extra heat, no change. No poop since this morning and I don't think she's changed position even to drink. Dipping her beak in the water seems ineffective. She doesn't fight me, but doesn't drink either.

She's gone. I held her, and told her if she wanted to stay I would help, but it was her choice. She opened her eyes and lifted her head to look at me, and then she was gone.
