Mountain Quail chicks are Dying.

One minute the look good and running around the next thing I know another is dead. I have no idea what is going on. Still in the brooder and good temp, plenty of food, eating well, then one dies. I started with 10 now 5 are alive. Any suggestions?

Pokes Sorry To Hear About Your Unsavory Results, I Have No Words Of Wisdom For You With Mountains But You Are Not Alone, They Are Quite Frail And Most Experience These Results... 1 Of The Reasons They Are So Expensive. A brooder too cold or too hot can lead to their demise. If they were born with an "umbilical cord" you may as well consider them lost. Mountain quail are no more fragile than any other quail. However all quail are extremely fragile

I baptize mine and watch them close until I see them drinking on their own they dehydrate fairly quick. I just hatched a mixed clutch of valleys and gambel they got just a little bit cool and started fussing / crying until I turned the temp up. Hey quail hollar I have seen probably 10-20 with cords when they were born and a small piece of eggshell attached it just dried up and fell off after a coupla days. The gamble /valleys seem like they have been the quickest to start eating and drinking on their own so far.

I have raised a lot of Mountains and they are much harder than the valleys,gambels or blue scale.
water in brooder should be changed daily and brooder paper daily...I stopped loosing mountain chicks
when I started using very high protien, Medicated turkey starter, till they are out of the brooder. Also
keep the brooder in low light cause the mountains tend to peck at each other where other breeds dont.

Thanks for all the help guys. I am not sure what was going on at first. I now only have three, but it has been a few days since any have died. I have been cleaning daily, fresh water, and I disinfected the tub I was using for the brooder.

Also keep brooder or "tub' off the ground like on a table ..the warm bottom has a lot to do with it ...and NO drafts...I hatched over 100 mountains this year in groups of 15 and lost 6 first hatch and now am down to losing maybe 0 or 1....mountains are worth it!
