Hello all. One of my new birds (16 week old Ameracauna) seems to have a mouth canker (white cheesy infected looking spot on the inside corner of her beak. I ordered some metronidazole from amazon, but it may not get here till Saturday or Monday. Anything else I can try in the mean time? I have read all kinds of old wives tales after a google search...bleach on a q-tip, thyme, sulfer shampoo, etc. canker.jpg

If you are wondering, she has some BlueKote on her beak...She had been pecked and lost some tail feathers.
Also, the sore is covering about half her cheek area inside her beak and a little way towards her throat.

I have no experience with canker, but some use acidified copper sulfate 1/4 tsp per gallon of water for 3 days of each month in flocks which are exposed to canker, to help prevent the disease from spreading. Some pet stores near you such as Petsmart/Petco may sell a product called API General Cure for fish, which contains praziquantel, a wormer which won't harm her and metronidazole. Also if you can find Fish Zole for fish or ronitazole for pigeons, they are for treatment of canker.

Oooh thanks, that's what I ordered from Amazon, I didn't think to look at Pet Supply Plus but they have it in stock here! I'm gonna go grab some and cancel my order. Good old fish antibiotics...got some Fishmox a few weeks ago...it's identical to the Amoxicilian humans take...same pill with same markings.
