Move eggs out of egg turner for lockdown?

That's a logical theory, but that's just just it........I'm hearing that it can be done both ways (successfully), and I'd rather take them out of the turner and lay them on the wire for the hatching. But again, I've read where this is a no-no ........ again, because the air sac needs to be at the top....

Randall no matter the bird, they do not sit on their eggs with the big side up. We do that in an incubator because we are only mimicking a mother bird. By the time they are ready to hatch, there should not be that much liquid left.

Quail chimer-inner here!

I have hatched both ways with quail eggs (Upright and on the side) and fell in LOVE with hatching in cartons! It's so much easier, the eggs aren't getting kicked around by the little squirts, and they do seem to hatch better! I got a 50% or better hatch! I was ECSTATIC because the packing left some to be desired!

But, I agree, you can probably hatch any way you feel, because Momma Bobwhite (Not coturnix, because coturnix are well, coturnix!

) doesn't have them in a carton.

Also, it is fine to have it open this long, they say if it's under a 1/2 hour, you're good! It takes me forever to pick out all the little eggs and switch them to the carton...

What she said.... I use the cartons because my bator is small, and my first hatch, a new chick cracked an egg and it died. So I avoid that by using egg cartons. Last hatch I had one egg too many and it was on it's side and it hatched.

Reason I'm asking, I've got a LG bator, with egg turner and quail rails. I've read where others say that the eggs need to be big-end-up all the way through lockdown because of the likelyhood of them drowning in the amniotic fluid if layed on their side

But, as you say, mamma hen doesn't stand them up big-end-up. I even went so far as to buying an extra set of quail rails so I can take the turner out as a complete unit, put the spare quail rails in so as to be able to keep the big end up. So, if I take them out of the turner for lockdown, and put the eggs on the wire, I'm gonna be OK with a successful hatch.......as much as I would with them upright in the quail rails?? Sorry, I'm confused.......

And I hope I'm not hijacking the thread with my questions. I apologize if it appears I am.

I think you're fine, Randall. They are at risk of drowning when they poke through the membrane, and if they humidity was too high, it is unfortunately filled with water, which drowns them AFTER lockdown.

Just my 2 cents!

Okie Dokie.........Thank y'all for all the very helpful info......And mrbstevens, I hope you didn't mind me inquiring also.......I wasn't trying to hijack your thread
