Ok I would like some ideas for making movable nesting boxes. Reason is I know I will have broodies as my breed is known for that so I want to move box and chicken so I do not disturb her more than I have too. If I use the standard built to the wall types that means taking hen out of nest box and her eggs to be place in a new one in hatching area. Much rather move whole nest box and hen and than just hen. I can always put in another nest box after one is removed.

So please post pics of your nest boxes that can be move. I need ideas here on how to set this up and what to use.

I use washing up bowls with "feet" attached so it doesn't tip over. Really easy to clean, hens seem perfectly happy with them and dead easy to move too. Hope this helps.

A plastic bowl that you wash your dishes in. Anything can be used for the feet, just something to stabilise it so that it doesn't tip over if they stand on the edges. We used a couple of pieces of left over laminate flooring attached with no-nails glue.

When I first got chickens, I just used plastic barrels that were cut in half and wedged some rocks into the sides of them so they wouldn't roll. Then I used a wooden post to put in front of them so the hens wouldn't scratch the straw/hay out.

I've seen people use buckets and milk crates also.

I am learning to "think outside the box". Pardon the pun

We have a really tacky dresser that is going in one coop, drawers secured partially out. And a small, old gas grill that doesn't work is going to be a nest, too. Chicken on the grill!

Well, if you don't already HAVE nesting boxes in your coop, and need to build them, why not try a box in a box type deal. Build your nesting box(es), then have an "insert" box, you could lift out of the main box(es) kinda like when you buy a pair of shoes, the bottom fits into the top,,,,,sorta??? If you do, make sure you make the inner or outer small, or large enough to easily be lifted out,,,,,,,,I like the idea of using 5 gallon plastic pails, (or milk crates) cut down to maybe 4- 6 inches tall or so. They could easily be fit into a regular nesting box, built large enough to accept them, and easily be lifted out when one gets broody, and placed where you want. Just a thought,,,,

Milk Crates - great idea - like building blocks - you could use hooks to hang them, when a hen is broodie, take that one off the wall and move it hen and all to whereever you want it, and replace with an different milk crate.

I've also read here on BYC of people using small, covered litter boxes as nest boxes, which I thought was quite clever. I have plastic tubs (cut down to an appropriate size) that slide into my wooden nest boxes.
