Yeah, you'd have to cover it with something to make sure the chickens didn't go thru it (they can go thru surprisingly small openings if they want to, 4x4 would not be too much of a stretch except for like an Orp rooster or such) and by the end of all that you'd have spent a LOT of money. It would *work*, in terms of a low fence to contain any chickens who didn't feel like flying/hopping over although not to exclude any predators; but it'd probably be one of teh more expensive possible ways of doing it.
If you jsut want to contain chickens, not keep out predators, just get a roll of flexible 1-2" mesh (construction fencing, or that plastic chickewire stuff, or whatever) and affix step-in posts to it every so often (experiment to find optimal spacing for your particular fence material). You'd just roll it up to store it, it'd be easy peasy to move and to set up, and it'd cost wayyyy less and do at least as good a job.
