Moving and have to give up my chickens.....BOOHOO

If you are going to be living in Chicago proper and not a suburb you can have chickens here is a link
http://home.centurytel.net/thecitychicken/chickenlaws.html As for the suburbs you will have to check out there codes also if you are moving to an area with a HOA you will have to find out from the association what their rules are. I hope you get to keep them and Welcome to Illinois.

Good luck to you; after reading the other posts, it doesn't seem hopeless. Most places allow small numbers of hens. Thyey're no louder than dogs.

Be SURE to get a copy of the ordiance if you got neighbors that would try to "muscle" their way about you having chickens. Yes they ARE legal in Chicago but outlying areas, its all depends on the variances.

Again, COPIES! I can not stress that enough! Find the word if they don't allow them "EXCEPT" or "UNLESS" that would give you a clue what leeway you have on your chickens. AND don't mention where you will live but have them mail you the copy or go there yourself for a copy of the ordiances.

instead of asking for the code/zoning enforcement in Chicago, ask for their legal department. i remember recently finding something on youtube that someone got the run around first from the police dept, then the city clerk/code enforcement who he asked for a copy of the actual law to be faxed to him (which the sent something that wasn't chicken/poultry related at all!). and finally he got through to their legal department who told them they had been getting lots of calls about it and there is NO LAW against keeping the chickens in the area!

found the link!!! good luck!!!

WOW!!! Chickie'sMoma, I can't believe the run around he gets!! At least the people that I have talked to have given me straight answers!! I did find 2 properties that allow chicks and have a 2 more that I am waiting to hear back from. YAY!!!

Best of luck to you! I can't imagine giving our chickens up and we've only had them for just over 12 weeks.

Keep trying, the right house is there for you and your chickens. I can't tell you how many houses we looked at, before moving 4 years ago.
