One of our female mallards got killed by a midday predator (seemed to match fox but killed in afternoon) attack last month and a week later our other female went broody. I decided to let her sit on the nest since she had already started but never intended to let her keep the babies with her. I've let chickens incubate eggs for me in the past and they seem to forget about the babies very quickly. I'm scared I may have traumatized my poor duck though. Her first five eggs hatched Monday, another two hatched yesterday. All seven are happy and safe in my spare bedroom brooder but Momma still seems upset. I can't get the unhatched eggs out of her nest, she bites at me when I try. Between my two drakes, chickens (including 3 roos), snakes, hawks, possums, fox, etc, I'm afraid to leave babies outdoors. Should Momma duck get over me taking her babies like chickens do or have I traumatized too bad?

I don't know, but I wonder if you could bring the mother in.

That may not be the best idea, just tossing it out there. Some ducks aren't that good with ducklings, so if you do that, watch closely to prevent trouble.

She seems to be doing much better this morning. She was waiting at the door with her drakes, head held high like normal (not scrinched down and nervous like when she was brooding). Came out to swim and everything. :-)
