Hello,

I am looking for some advice. I currently have two very lovely little call ducks, we have had them since they were little ducklings and I am very attached. Currently I live in the countryside and I have a very large allotment by my house so the ducks have a little fenced off area with a little kiddie pool and mini hut for sleeping. We do not clip their wings they are free to mingle during the day across the land, the neighbours are happy for them to wonder into their allotment.

Unfortunately I am moving in December due to work commitments and will be moving into a more residential area. I do have a front and back garden in the new house but..... its gravel :barnie

My friend has told me that ducks can not be kept on gravel and maybe I should find them a new home as its difficult to keep ducks in a residential area. Obviously I don't want to do this, I love my ducks.

I should also point out that I have a Jack Russell. For this reason they would not be able to have the run of the back garden, however there is a relatively big area to the side of the house that would give two call ducks plenty of room. I thought we could lay sand, install a pond and put netting over this side so they don't feel cooped up all the time. I also considered it would be good for them as they won't have to be rounded up and put in their little house each night as it will be covered and safe, so they can go in and out as they please. Is this wishful thinking?

I am willing to make changes, sand maybe or anything else people think will help.

I was wondering if anyone keeps ducks in a residential area? how has it been and are they happy?

P.S I'm sorry if this should have gone into a sticky post... I did try to find the one about coops etc but they all seem to be countryside like my set up now.

The neighbours have already said they don't mind, they're quite excited in fact, told me she had always wanted duck :p. Ours are drakes and not too noisy, more of a low short quack. It's the set up than the noise we are worried about, I want them to be happy.

I think your set up sounds great! And if your neighbors don’t mind then even better! I live in a residential area and the only restrictions are the housing has to be 50ft from any sleeping quarters... we are probably pushing that, but our neighbors don’t seem to mind. My two girls are relatively quiet though. We have about a 13x6 area fenced off, just grass and dirt, pineshavings in coop, and a 40 Gallon stock tank for a pond. For your netting on top make sure it’s predator proof! Maybe do wire mesh instead? Let us know how it goes.
