When I finally decided to buy chickens. I wanted to also move the old chicken coop and run. The chickens currently live under the shelter of many trees. Some are fruit trees some not. They have shade and access to the sun at all times of the day. Also they are on a small hill and catch a nice breeze most of the time. I have watched the posts here though of the struggles with the heat and have decided to leave things as is. I also wanted to move the nest boxes off the floor but also have learned that since my chickens can not fly maybe it is best to also leave those alone. I thank all of you for your posts. I am so grateful for all you teach me.

Sounds like a good decision, Kim. Chickens can live in many different types of conditions and situations, but heat is one thing that is very hard to deal with. They handle cold so much better than heat, so leaving it under the trees is probably a very wise choice. And nestboxes are best if they aren't too high to prevent leg injuries, so it's fine that they are at floor level.

Kim, I have seen your coop....and personally....I love the location. Other than the hill you have to climb to get to them. The winter will make it a little harder.....but for them, its perfect!
