Moving to San Jose

My husband and I are moving from Phoenix to San Jose, CA -- we're hoping you BYCers can give us some suggestions on where to find a chicken-friendly rental property.

If I were you, I would post an ad on Craigslist. Just check it out before you put down a deposit, though. There are a lot of rental scams. You might also put a wanted-to-rent ad in the San Jose Mercury News. If you don't have any luck in San Jose itself, you might try the surrounding areas like Gilroy, Morgan Hill, or San Martin. I am curious why you are moving TO California, though. I just moved away from there a year ago.

Ok, first of all stay away from Craigslist unless the listing has a pic and the people show you the bank note that they own the home and have the right to rent it. This scam is going crazy in CA. People who have left their homes come back after a few months to find out that someone who doesn't own it rented it out and it is really hard to get people out - you do not want to deal with that!!!

Second, get a list of property management companies in the area and start calling them. Let THEM do the work for you. It is what the homeowners pay them for, to find good, honest tenants.

OP, just adding that scammers are faking notes, ID's, and county recorded documents, and they also host fraudulent in-person showings of the actual houses. Checking out the previous public tax records is the way to go in this day and age of shady "owners" (with properties about to foreclose), agents, and management companies. Scammers have gotten very devious the more the public has become aware of the typical older scam methods. That said, our family has several rentals (as do many people we know) and we all use mostly word of mouth but also CL along with MLS and other forms of advertising.

Good information. The housing scam has really become an ordeal for people.

I use craigslist, there are scammers, anything too good to be true usually is. The scammers swipe all kinds of photos, so if you see a picture of a house in San Jose with a snow man in the yard....skip it. I would plan visiting and applying 3+ weeks before you plan on moving.

You can call property management companies to see what they have, I would be surprised if many were interested in allowing chickens. Makes for more work for them in re-renting and showing to future tenants.

Normally I would agree with that, however San Jose is pretty much farming country. Lots and lots of large farms, so chickens aren't really a foreign animal to people there. To the OP, the 3 weeks ahead of time Carol suggested is a GREAT idea. San Jose stinks in many places - because of the farms.

I think you can find chicken friendly property, just not with your average MLS or Property Management Co. Comes down to liability and rentability issues.

Private owners are more likely to rent.

San Jose has changed a lot from the town it was when I was younger too.

Not any more. Not for many years. Fresno yes. San Jose no. Almost all the farms in San Jose are under concrete and subdivisions now and have been for a long time. It is a shame because the Santa Clara Valley was once some of the very richest farmland in the world. I used to do DHIA testing of cows there, and all the dairies I used to go to are long gone. San Jose is now Silicon Valley and hi tech. Or was until the economy went south. My guess is that the best places to look for chicken friendly property would be in east San Jose or the Almaden area, but that too, may be out of date. Any smells in San Jose are not likely to be due to farming. There may be a few farms that escaped the urban onslought, but not very many.
