We have 3 chickens that are 4 years old. We have to move cross country from Florida to California! We want to take them with us on our journey by car, but do not want to harm them in any way. I fear this is too long of a trip to take them. Has anyone does this with success? If so, HOW?

If you can, before you begin your journey you should try to cage train your chickens so they don't freak out and hurt themselves. For the actual car ride you should car train your chickens too. If they do get 'carsick' you can give them vet recommended sedatives to make the journey less awful for you and your chickens. While driving you should stop every 2 hours or so to let the chickens stretch their legs and have a chance to eat. You can put dropping trays in the cages to make them easy cleaning and always have water available as they may get hot or thirsty which is never good. Don't provide food while traveling but let them eat every time you stop. It may be a good idea to bring a dog's collapsible fence so they don't wander.

You may run into inspection stations that will require a CVI from an approved Veterinarian or they could confiscate your girls. It might be a pain in the neck, but I'd get it done. They get really fussy about disease and interstate travel here. That's what stops the spread of diseases like avian flu to other parts of the country. If you are traveling I-10 , due to drug trafficking, especially in Texas, they have tons of inspection stations with x-ray machines. If you're coming across on the 40 it'll be much easier. I don't want to be a downer for you. I'm moving from here to Texas in 2 years with 15 hens, 8 dogs and 2 horses. I'm worried. Here's a phone # for Ca dpt of Ag. I'd give them a call to ask. General California Entry Requirements (Call (916) 900-5052 for more specific information):

On a happy note and back to traveling with them, I moved from Fla to Ca with 2 horses, 4 dogs, 2 cats and 2 Cockatoos. It was quite an adventure but not a big problem. It can be done. What are you traveling in? VW? Van? Moving truck? Pack their own water. Livestock is sensitive to a chance in taste. Get them used to a ball waterer if you can. You can buy a battery operated crate fan if it'll be hot. You won't be able to be leisurely on the trip. Those gals should be just fine for 4 days. Best of luck to you!

x2. You will need to talk with your veterinarian, and probably USDA, to have things in order for your trip. A large dog crate should work fine for transport and motel overnights. Good luck! Mary

Start by calling the FL department of agriculture, along with the CA department of agriculture to see what tests need to be done to transport the birds across state lines.
