Hello
I will be moving from the Midwest to the South and I want to take my chickens with me.
Some I have had several years and I have formed bonds with them.

Any advice on how to move 20 chickens 4 states away?

Call your state agricultural office and see what testing is required before you move them across state lines.

I moved recently as well. I got rid of my birds so I can only give you the advice I have from helping my mom move a flock from Wisconsin to Montana (she used the covered bed of a pickup and filled it with straw) and my own experience driving chickens from Utah to Montana. I used wire dog crates with cardboard beneath and outside (to protect the car/trailer/whatever) and I stopped bringing water. Instead I made a mash from their regular feed and checked it periodically as we traveled. I found that aside from making a huge mess, the chickens were too freaked out to really drink. I’m not sure they ate much but at least with a mash you can see if they eat because it’s less likely to just wind up on the floor. How many days are you planning on taking to drive?

It's only a 10 hour drive
Thanks for the great info
