Big ol' Black Copper Maran rooster ran at me on the other side of the chicken wire. I went into his area and the booger came at me. I raised my foot at him and he came at me- I kicked his head. He did it again, and I kicked at him. One last time he came at my foot with his wings flapping; I gave him a good kick and he decided to stop the attitude. No problem since then, but I watch him.

When a rooster walks about flapping his wings, is he announcing he's the big cockadoodledoo around here?

Yup. He's feeling like he's king of the barnyard. Keep an eye on him. He may get better or he may get worse. I was ready to put my roo in the pot because he started being a jerk when he came of age, but he settled down after a few months. I'm glad I didn't butcher mine. I won't hatch any eggs fertilized by him because I don't want any human aggressive babies, but he can stay around as protection for the ladies.

Good luck with yours.

Flapping, strutting, pecking at the ground = "I have not given up. Be prepared because I know that I can kick your butt!" Nip his attitude in the bud or it will escalate. If you plan on hatching eggs, remember that in most instances 'like begets like'.

"Cletus" is quite the specimen other than his attitude. You're right about the breeding concerns.

Mine was nice as he could be then all a sudden one day decided he was bigger than me Lol I'm a bog ole boy
Since We got us an understanding if he wants to be a bully he could get carried around like a baby
He soon lost his attitude and is nice as he can be again
They can be changed for good or bad
Just cause he got honery a time or so doesnt mean hes a bad chicken

I never had a Marans roo attack me. When the Marans started their shuffle dance, I just gave it back at them.
I think they thought I was crazier than they were.

I have had a RIR roo engage me twice.

By the second time he was covinced that my Red Wing boots were tougher than he was.

Never bothered me after, He must have decided that playing football was way to risky.

I miss that RIR. He died protecting the ladies when a hawk came to visit.

best of luck

I've had a flock of "Mutts" for nearly two decades now. Initially I had Roos that would attack humans-----equal stewpot. I now keep about 3 Roos to my flock of different ages, installed spares, so to speak, for when age catches up to the current "Mr Studly". Since the Roos that survived were gentle Roos----their genes are in my entire flock now. Having an older Roo tends to keep and teach the younger Roos how to behave around the Hens and Humans. I am gradually breeding toward a large black chicken color egg laying dual purpose Mutt and do so by adding pullets of the characteristics I'm looking for. Size, feather color, egg laying, and of course----Roo Attitude.
