I everyone! I look forward to learning how to really care of my chickens. I have several different varieties. Buy, 3 are kept separate from the rest of the flock. We have a Frizzle Rooster (white) and 1 white hen (Marlyn Frizzle Monroe) and 1 black Bantam (Barbara Bantam Streisand). These 3 are pets. The 3 Rooster Polish and 3 hens, 1 beautiful Americana Rooster and 6 hens, 1 White and Brown Rooster, and 4 Black Americana"s I think. Anyway these are the egg layers. Right now they are all laying their eggs in 1 spot and if we collect them, they wait a day or so and then pick a different spot to lay their eggs. Once in front of the house and once in the coop. Everytime we collect they stop. What's up with that and what can I do? Thanks for any help you give.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

It is possible you have some that are laying in the nest boxes and some that are laying in front of the house. Collecting eggs will not cause them to not lay, this is probably the cycle they are on. Make sure your nest boxes are clean at all times, accessible and I like to leave fake eggs in every box. Keep the hens thinking that it is safe to lay in all of them.

If this continues to be a problem, you might post this in our Egg Laying forums for more ideas on what to do....https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/18/chicken-behaviors-and-egglaying

Good luck and I hope you can get them all to lay in the coop!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to your our flock. TwoCrows has given you some good advice and a good link. Fake eggs, called "Nest Eggs," that look, weigh, and feel real, can be purchased from some hatcheries and feed stores. To save money, some chicken owners use golf balls instead, although some will argue that not all chickens are fooled by golf balls. I don't know whether there is any validity to that argument or not, but just to be on the safe side I use the ceramic Nest Eggs. Good luck in getting your hens laying in their nest boxes.

Thanks for your reply. Last night they layed eggs in 3 of the nests. So, I took all but 3 and penciled marked those. I will check again in a little while and see how the took that. They have been averaging about 12 a day from all of them. Some maybe not quite old enough yet. Only 2 or 3 blue, the rest are from white to tan,

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3, the fake eggs are a good way to go, and make sure your nest boxes are attractive to chickens, dark, secluded, easy to get into, plenty of bedding etc.
