Back in June, I bought three hens from the local hatchery, they were selling off this year's breeding stock. One of them is a silver laced Wyandotte. From the day I brought her home, she has been very self-assured. She isn't really bossy, she's actually great with the other birds, but she definately doesn't take any crap.

Last night, I got home from work at around 10:30. I opened the back door and a couple windows to let some fresh air in, as it finally cooled off outside. The neighbors a few houses away were having a rather loud party. *sigh*. Oh well, I wasn't going to bed right away anyway. I walked into the kitchen an hour later, to find Ms Bossy at my back door, grumbling at me. My husband had forgotten to close the gate to the chicken run after the girls went to bed. So she got up, left the coop, walked out of the run, and came to get me because she couldn't sleep. I scooped her up (not her favorite thing), apologized for the interruption to her beauty rest, and put her back in the coop.

While the rest of the chicks avoid the camera, she comes up for her close up:

Her newest thing is her position that she should be allowed in the house, so she comes in whenever she sees the back door open. She has decided that dog food isn't really tasty, but it does belong on the floor. Note the three EE pullets wondering just what in the world she's doing:

Since she didn't get eaten, the rest decided that it must be cool too. This was a couple of days after the last pic was taken, I turned back for a minute and this is what I see:

Sorry for the poorer focus on this one, I snapped a pic really quick and grabbed the broom to shoo them back out. You can see Bossy's fluffy butt on the far right. Nosy chicken........

I have 6 pullets I got in May and from day one one of my BO took charge and so we named her "Bossy Bertha". She even stands up to the 4 week older cockerel from time to time. Chickens are very entertaining

Adorable! I love assertive hens, they are such a hoot.

Thanks, she has been such a joy to have around. When I first brought her home, one of the young cockerals I had started nonchalantly pecking the feathers on her back. She stared at him, clucked once, he ignored her, then she pecked him right between the eyes and squawked. The look on her face was priceless, as was his as he ran away. All my chickies are neat, I have been very surprised this year as I have started keeping them, not to mention the lawn in the backyard and the veggie garden have done very well.
