JP, so sorry to hear that.

Any idea what it might have been? Any indications on the body re. what was wrong? Do you think it was indeed an infection of some sort?

I really don't know for certain. There seems to be others here who are experiencing similar symptoms with their chickens.

I've been reading those posts & it looks like some are egg bound issues but others are suffering conditions unknown but seem to be pointing towards colds/pneumonia or even possibly bacterial infections.

Oh, JP...I'm SO very sorry! You really do learn a lot each time you have an ill or injured bird. I'm just so sorry it ended like this. YOu worked really hard to make sure she had everything she needed, and often (seems like more times than not) it makes no difference how hard you try; if they're not going to make it, they just don't. I feel like they have to have a very strong will to live and fight - maybe that's just anthropomorphizing them, but I do believe this.

One thing to look into, JP, is ventilation. Patandchickens on here has an excellent page about ventilation: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=1642-VENTILATION

It
might sound unimportant, but I had issues with respiratory illnesses in my birds through winter (they don't get colds, BTW); I read Patanchicken's ventilation page, added more ventilation, and this winter, I have to say, I've not heard the sneezing/coughing I heard last year AT ALL. Please read it when you have time - not saying that it has anything to do with your girl, but it's a possibilty.

Hugs to you!!!
