Mt. Healthy Hatchery EXTRA EXTRA!

My understanding is if you order all pullets the extra would also be from a sexed pullet bin of a same sized breed you ordered.
That's what the person I talked to said when I placed the order. I told her that I knew hatcheries sometimes included an extra, and often it was a cockerel. I told her I already had a rooster, and really, really didn't want a cockerel. She assured me that if there was an extra chick, it would be a pullet, since I ordered all pullets.

Hi all,

This is my first time ordering chicks from an online hatchery. I will be receiving a batch of 5 chicks next week from Mt. Healthy and I’m very excited! I’m curious if people typically receive “extra” chicks in their orders from Mt. Healthy? I’ve read reviews on other hatcheries where extra chicks (specifically Roos) just magically get added to their order? Yikes! Has anyone experienced this with Mt. Healthy? Just curious!
Mt Healthy is amazing. They will pack extras or not, they aim to please and they want you to be successful. Meyer is huge and has tempting offerings but you will get surprises on your order because they are in a hurry to pack the boxes and get them out.

No- Mt Healthy sends an extra pullet if that's what you ordered. I love them and they send big healthy chicks. Meyer has the most accurate sexing though, and they try hard but they set some really small eggs that lead to a few problems and they also may substitute breeds in a rush to get your order packed and then sell what you are missing 10 minutes later. They put themselves in charge instead of the customer so I don't prefer that but they have some really cool offerings like sexed banties and rare breeds no one else has. Hard to boycott them.

Adorable! I got an extra Americana with my order last year. It took me a little bit to figure it out since one of my Olive Eggers was black and two were blue and I had two chipmunk Americana and two that looked different.

If you take individual close up pics, it would be fun to help you figure out what the extra is! (It’s always something from your order!)

I took these today, buy I will try to get individual ones tomorrow when I clean the cage, a few are getting dirty bums, but I don’t want to take them out of the heat lamp today and then again tomorrow to soak. I can set up a second heat lamp for the ones I soak. There is one with feathered feet I think is the Brahma

By a Quick Look, I think your extra is either a tan w brown stripe chick or a grey one, narrowing it down to an olive egger, isbar, Americana, Legbar or Welsummer. I can pick out the Cuckoo & French Marans, one of the grays is your isbar, the white is the leghorn, poofy cheek is Americana, Brahma is light w feather legs, and two of the stripes are Welsummer & Legbar. Do any of the grey ones have very lightly feathered legs? If so it is your olive egger from French Marans. If not, you would have an olive egger from a Welsummer or Barnevelder. I would definitely get those pasty butts cleaned up….too long with a blockage can hurt/kill them. I have found that very warm water with coconut oil on a paper towel helps it slide off quick and keeps it from sticking the next time. Can’t wait to see the individual pics! 😊
