I'm new to raising chickens and I have 9 chicks that are 5 weeks old from Mt Healthy Hatchery. I live in Ohio where they are located and the local news is covering the story of the outbreak of salmonella from the hatchery. I called the hatchery and no one could answer my questions maybe someone here can. My chickens look healthy what do I have to look for to know if they are sick? Could they look healthy and have salmonella? I'm freaking out any information would be great. Thank you

Peach,

The chicks will look healthy, but please be advised....

~This is not a "normal strain" of salmonella seen in poultry
~Salmonella lasts for months in the environment so you don't have to fondle/kiss the chicks to get it
~Assume they have it and take the necessary precautions
~Spend some time on the CDC sight and make an educated decision

Peach what did you decide to do? I am in the same boat and am completely torn. My coop will be done this weekend and they are ready to go in. I have to decide quick!
