much more hyper-just some thoughts about my new girls

I have 6 RIR and 2 Americuans that are about 9 weeks old. They have been moved outside and are doing fantastic. So we decided we needed a bit more variety (I hear this is called chicken math) to our new little flock so purchased 1 California White, 1 Austra White and 2 turkens. They are about 2 1/2 weeks old now and are much more skiddish when we walk near their brooder and do not like being held at all. The first batch of chicks never seemed to care about us holding them. I wonder if it is the different breeds.

Its most likely its the breeds, but it also depends on the handling as well. I got my Australorps last year from a breeder at 2 days old. I talked to them frequently and had lots of fun with them. they are mostly tame, but dont care to be handled.

My Americaunas on the other hand are wild as wild can be. They were never handled by their breeder and I got them at 6 months old. As a result I can handle them at all, its a chase to get one. Because i work, the chicks I hatched myself are flighty too, they have not been handled as much as my older hens. Its likely they will always be spooky.

If your chicks are 2.5 weeks old and never really handled, they are not imprinted to humans so might be instinctually seeing you as a threat.

Thanks for the response....I should have mentioned we did get them as little girlies, just a few days old and we tried holding them just as much as the others at first, must be a breed thing We love them anyway. Their names are Hepler (a local pizza place called Heplers has a California white pizza we love), Snow, Coral and Dick.
