My coop is off the ground with a plywood floor, had built that way as a neighbor told me she was certain the dirt floor of her coop contributed to bumblefoot. I use a thick layer of fine pine shavings, scooping like a litter box weekly. My chickens have a kennel attached as their run (they also free range) & I layer with lots of straw, helps keep their feet clean in bad weather. This has worked well so far, but I am in Calif., & haven't had snow at my location for 2 years (drought here). The real test is when I get a 'normal' winter.
