I should have known from the occasional poopy eggs

, next time you see a poopy egg, inspect and clean the dirty bird(s)

Dominique #2 known as Buttercup has been sleeping on top of the nesting boxes for a while now, instead of sleeping on the roost with the rest of the chickens. Buttercup was sleeping on a sloped board and poop was piling up. Add to that her eggs were poopy while the nest boxes were totally clean

Today, I noticed a large "yucker" on her backside, it was a muddy turd clod! My wife (RN) inspected her, then we trimmed off the clod and cleaned her up...yuck. As gross as that was, we both thought it was going to be something worse

Other than a slightly funny walk, Buttercup was acting healthy and normal.

Our first year with chickens...full of surprises,

+ I forgot to mention that we gave her a good backside feather trim also.

I have heard that feathery Cochins can develop these issues as well.

Buff Orps looks pretty feathery around back...good luck.

When that happened to one of my birds, I never thought to cut the feathers. I got dawn dish soap and took her to my bathroom sink and immersed her, filled my hand with soap and started gently scrubbing it off. It took 3 or 4 sinks full of water and a lot of dawn. Then she got a good blow dry and a night inside.

She was walking fine the next day...but it was gross.

Well, there is always more to the story

and now I know that I need to build a longer roost. It is true that they all want to roost on the highest one.

I tried my best by myself to wash that thing off, but I wasn't sure that it wasn't part of the chicken anatomy

Holding the bird AND trying to figure out what is going on AND smelling the stink...was not easy. Rags, soapy water and dry towels were all I had within reach...scissors too? My wife knew within a few seconds that it needed to be trimmed off.

Buttercup is going to look a little funny with a trimmed backside. Another chicken pseudo-emergency at the Dalton household,

Tatertot is a great name for a Buff Orp!
