Mulch in run?

I'm not loving plain dirt and our run is on a slope, so sand won't really work. Can you use mulch? What kind? How do you know if it's full of pesticides or something?
 
I don't use mulch but instead large tree bark wood chips. Got the idea from a "chicken whisperer" video from TSC website.

I put a bale of hay in mine, big round bale, pick some off and scatter in the run and let the girls scatter the rest of it. They break it up really fast and it's handy to put it in the coop

I've been putting everything in our run. Right now we have shredded maple leaves, dirt, grass, and homemade wood chips.
