Most any organic (as in it will decay) mulch that is somewhat absorbent and not directly toxic will work. I use mostly whatever I can rake up from my property which is a varying mixture of pine straw, leaves, and grass. Lately I've been using a considerable amount of shredded office paper. This works fairly wel in the henhouse, but in the yard itself tends to disappear fairly fast so I'm going back to what I can rake up for that soon.
