My husband went to buy a standard rooster and came home with 1 standard rooster and 3 pairs of Japanese bantams. 3 hens and 3 roosters. (He thought he bought all hens but soon as he got home I knew what he had done.)
Question. Can I house all these chickens together with my regular hens (8 Isa browns) or am I going to need to separate them? I keep my hens in an electric livestock netting fence. Will I need to clip wings to keep them in? Or just keep them locked up? My coop is smaller but they have a very large run in the day .

I'm 1 part amused at his error and 2 parts frustrated I can't babysit chickens all day and if the new ones escape my dogs will eat them

Advise is appreciated.

those bantams are going to need their own coop.

Bantam roosters often have a bit of a napoleon complex... and having 3 of them.... I am thinking has a very high chance of not working.

Little bantams also tend to be fantastic fliers... so yes, you will need to trim wings to keep them grounded, of net the top of the run to keep them contained.

Even if you made a bantam coop... not sure you would be able to have 3 males with 3 females.... unless they each had their own cage.... one pair per cage.

If you got rid of the bantam males... I would worry about the bantam females under a standard sized roo.... either 1. you trim the wing feathers of the girls so that they don't fly out of the run to get eaten by dogs...but then they can't fly away from the full sized roo and that roo will smush them flat when he tries to mate....

2. don't trim their feathers so that they can avoid the full sized roo, but then you need to net the run.

Japanese roosters are really relaxed so they probably will be OK together but they need more hens.

Welcome! It sounds as though your hubby wants to build another coop, or greatly enlarge your existing space, to accommodate his cute new bantams! How wonderful!
We've enlarged our coop three times now, because of 'chicken math'.
Post pictures! I'm sure there will be lots of advice here about developing a larger coop and run!

Thank you everyone!

So far everyone is getting along fine. I clipped wings 1st thing this morning. The "coop" is a 5c10x6 fully enclosed dog kennel and outside they have about 1/3 an acre fenced for them.

I will probably add a small bantam barn later this summer. I find the diversity so interesting and will separate the small bantams later if needed. I have another 12 hens in the brooder so the roosters should be well occupied with 20 large hens.

I'll stay watchful until then.
