Mumsy's Romantic Garden Advice

and some plants don't take "true" from seeds. hybrids, or something that is prone to cross pollination (those notorious squash family things!) So if you can take a cutting, that's the best way to get exactly what was there!

Hmmm I never thought of that kaussandra ....... I would of thought the seeds would be the same as the plant? Hmmmmmm maybe if we go back that way we take a cutting. After we ask of course

. Tho I doubt the attendants at the had station would care lol
Sometimes seeds can give you a cornucopia of surprises because they are hybrids. Sometimes the seed will be sterile for the same reason. Cuttings are true clones of the parent stock.

Seeds from pansies, columbine, poppies, calendulas, and many others can give you a whole range of colors if they were open pollinated in the garden. Other things like vegetables will come true from seed if they are heritage varieties and they were the only of their kind in the garden.

In the front yard here there is a rose of sharon. This may not sound strange to anyone else, but it is predominantly white but is has a very small section of pink flowers. Anyone have anything like that?

I'm still not caught up all the way with this thread so that may have been discussed somewhere before, so please excuse!

I'm guessing you have 2 different kind that were grafted into each other maybe? Just a guess but that's what Mumsy said about my Hawthorne tree since it also blooms 2 different colors.

Oh and my mom said she will save her seeds from her rose of Sharon as well for when exchange seeds :)

If you have a chance to take and post an image, this would really jog my memory. This kind of sounds like 'Barnsley'. Does it look like this?

Ok well I decided to pull my carrots today. The root part I could see has been green forever but was at least an inch in diameter.
Here is the tag with the carrots

And this is what I pulled up

The one at the bottom was slimy....do carrots get blight also? Any suggestion why I got multiple colored malformed carrots?

On a fun note here is one of my giant sunflowers

It's a foot in diameter and easily weighs close to 5 pounds. I will def be saving seeds from it to plant next year. I have several more this size. :)
