. I know how hard it is to lose birds.

I think the one hen that went mia is dead this makes for day three that she's been gone. I moved the last remaining caged chickens to my out building last night and the dog hasn't yet been back. Which I am greatful for. And thank you all, and sumi I know how you feel, I am the same way but I feel that if the dog keeps coming back to kill my chickens he's a danger to my small children. But I'm happy that I can watch the remaining hens and roo plunder in my backyard worry free again. It was good to have them come running to greet me this morning.

You got to do what you got to do. We had a terrible problem with mongoose in SA and my DH didn't want to kill them. They ended up killing 32 of my chicks and young chickens! We got fed up and killed 6 mongoose before they stopped coming. When we killed them I felt bad at first, but I couldn't just sit back and watch them destroy my flock. We put the chicks in a special, secure run and the mongoose started killing my hens and stealing eggs. We had to do something and though it was unpleasant, it solved the problem.

If that dog is out to destroy your flock and is a threat to your children, well, then there's only one thing to do. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. The dog that killed my chicken had a home and a meal a day 5 days a week at least, so with a little intervention (and a few threats) we sorted that problem. But I think the kindest thing to do with "your" dog is to put him/her to sleep humanely. Sometimes that is the best solution.
