I just got my first duckling. We have a pond on our property which is basically rain water. Will it be okay for my duck (once it's old enough) to go in this water, or should it be cleaned. It's murkey looking, lots of insects for it to eat, and some algae is forming on the top. If I should clean it, any tips?

No reason to be concerned for the duck from a pond like that... just for the pond itself once the duck invades.

Depending upon where you are and the conditions of the pond you might have problems with avain botulism, commonly referred to as western duck sickness, in the summer months. This may take place during high temperatures, low water oxygen content, and decomposing vegetable and/or animal matter. The duck may suffer slight paralysis and appear to be limping. If this happens, immediately put the duck in a shady area and give it plenty of fresh water.
